Face Jugs and Roosters by Brian Wilson A gallery of North Georgia pottery including face jugs, ugly jugs, roosters, and pigs by Brian Wilson. "Face Jugs" or "Ugly Jugs" are a tradition in the North Georgia Mountains dating back to the Meader family in the early 1800's. Each potter lends their own style and sense of humor to their jugs. Brian Wilson is a fourth generation potter. As far back as 1918, his great-grandfather, Loy Skelton, began making pottery. His grandfather, Hallie Wilson began the Wilson Pottery business in 1927. Brian has been gaining national recognition with his unique style. It is believed that ugly face jugs were first created to drive away evil spirits. In the early 1900’s, bootleggers relied on potters to provide them with non-transparent vessels for their whiskey. The ugly face jugs were made by the potters to show their support for Prohibition while providing the jugs for the bootlegged whiskey.
