William A. Flowers is a self-taught folk art potter from North Carolina. He began making functional pottery in 1969. He built his first potter's wheel using an old truck axle, odd metal parts and a bag of cement and his earliest wood firing experience nearly set his home on fire. Through trial and error and experimenting, William has become a collected Southern Folk Artist. In the early 80's, William made his first face jugs, which presented a new opportunity for his artistic talents. Over the years, William has developed a recognizable style of portraying individual characters on his face jugs (each one of a kind) and folk art human and animal figures. Sometimes in satire, sometimes grotesque, always unique. Each item is created individually with years of experience with traditional Southern techniques of working with clay, glazes and firing. William enjoys the challenge of working very large and surprising his collectors with new ideas. He originated techniques that are now shared by other potters. Jo Flowers assists her husband in the pottery and creates a variety of free-spirited face jug personalities and folk art clay creatures representing her own relaxed attitude for life.
