John Akers is a self taught artist, as can be discerned by both his visionary style and rich palette. He has achieved substantial recognition for his hand-colored copperplate etchings, which follow in the footsteps of such great artists as Audubon. Each copperplate etching is strictly limited to an edition of 200, plus a limited number of artist's proofs.
The art of copperplate etching is over 500 years old, having been used by such masters as Goya, Rembrandt, Picasso, Audubon, and Whistler. The process is also called intaglio printing, and it is both exacting and time consuming. Because each piece is hand printed in black and white, and then hand-colored, no two etchings are exactly alike, and each print is considered a "multiple original." Etching editions are limited in number, and while generally less expensive than other original art; they are highly collectable.
