Maxine Helmey was first exposed to watercolor in 1987 while living in Augusta, one of Georgia's most beautiful cities. After studying under some of the most accomplished artists in the country, she became
a serious artist.
Returning to her hometown of Savannah, Georgia, she continued to paint commissioned pieces and enjoyed teaching several classes a week. This gave her the freedom to paint different subjects and try new techniques.
Maxine's work has won numerous recognitions and awards including: first place, state of Georgia Marine Extension Service for Anthozian; merit award for Summer Gate,
Savannah Art Association, and best of show for Rainy Night in Georgia. The magazine Best Read Guide of Savannah chose her Six Pence Pub for their May, 2003 cover.
Her next Savannah series was titled Around and About the Squares, followed by Gates and Gardens of Savannah. Work in this series included both watercolor and oils.
